Mother's Day Gifts Better Than Flowers
For the one who always listens, including when nobody asked how she was. Flowers are lovely and they're dead in nine days — these are things she'd still be using in six months.
Particularly worth thinking about if she's the person holding everything together for everyone else, which is the usual case and the one nobody buys for.
The short version
- Flowers are lovely and dead in nine days. The gifts that land are the ones still doing something in October.
- The best Mother's Day gift for most mothers is time in which nothing is asked of them — and it is the one thing almost nobody gives.
- “I don't want anything” usually means don't spend money, not don't think about me. Skip the object; never skip the note.
- Mother's Day is genuinely painful for a lot of people. If you know someone for whom it is, say something rather than nothing.

Better than flowers — and why that is a low bar
Flowers are the default because they are legible: everyone understands them, they arrive on the day, and nobody has to think. They are also a gift with an expiry date, a vase to find, and water to change — a small recurring task handed to the person in the household who is already doing all of them.
The alternative is not a more expensive object. It is an object that keeps working. Something held daily, or something that says one kind thing each morning, is being measured on a longer scale than a bouquet, and by June the comparison is not close.
The gift almost nobody gives
Ask mothers what they actually want and the answer is remarkably consistent, and it is not an object. It is an interval of time in which nothing is required of them — no decisions, no logistics, nobody asking where anything is.
That is harder to wrap, which is exactly why it does not get given. But it is straightforward to deliver: take the children out for four hours, do the full weekly shop without asking what is needed, or handle the entire day's meals from planning to washing up. The distinguishing feature is that she does not have to project-manage it, because delegated work that still requires supervision is not a gift.
For the mum who says she doesn't want anything
It is usually true about the money and false about the attention. Most people saying this are declining expense and fuss, not declining to be thought about, and the safest reading is to spend less on the object and considerably more on the note.
Be specific in it. Not “thanks for everything” — something she actually did that you noticed and never mentioned. The years of packed bags, the appointment she remembered, the way she handled a particular bad week. Specificity is the whole thing; it is the evidence that you were paying attention.
If she is the one holding everything together
The usual case, and the one nobody buys for. The person who listens to everyone else's day is frequently the person nobody asks about, and it can take years for anyone to notice — including her.
A comfort object for an adult is more normal than people admit; roughly a third of adults keep one. So is needing a small reliable thing that is not asking you for anything. If a plushie reads as too much, a charm or a card deck does the same work quietly on a desk.
When Mother's Day is hard
For people who have lost their mother, who are estranged from her, who have lost a child, who are having treatment that is not working, or who are simply not a mother and wanted to be — the second Sunday of May is a day of unavoidable advertising about something painful.
If that is someone you know, send a message. Not a card about mothers; a short line saying you know today is hard and you are thinking of them. The widespread instinct to say nothing in case it upsets them gets it backwards — the silence is the part that hurts.
