New Baby Gifts — Including One for the Parents
The baby will receive a great deal. The parents will receive almost nothing, which is backwards, because the baby is fine and the parents have not slept since March.
So this list is half keepsakes for the child and half things for the adults holding it all together — and if you only take one thing from this page, take that second half.
The short version
- Buy something for the parents. Almost nobody does, and the newborn will not remember the gift.
- Skip newborn-size clothes — everyone sends those. Size 6–12 months arrives when the drawer is empty and the visitors have stopped.
- You cannot choose a child's comfort object for them; you can only put a candidate within reach. Buy two identical ones if you want a spare.
- Nothing loose goes in a cot for the first year. Give the plushie for lap time and floor time, not for sleep.

The gift nobody sends: something for the parents
In the first month a baby will receive somewhere between fifteen and forty gifts. The people who have not slept, whose bodies are recovering, and who are being asked for everything by everyone will receive approximately none. It is one of the strangest customs we have.
So send something to the adults. A meal that arrives hot and needs no thanks. A cleaner for two hours. A card that says something to them rather than about the baby. Postnatal depression affects roughly one in seven mothers, and it thrives on exactly this — being invisible in your own house while everyone coos at the cot.
What they already have too many of
- Newborn-size clothes
- Everyone buys these and babies are in them for weeks. Buy 6–12 months instead: it arrives when the drawer is bare and the attention has moved on.
- Soft toys, in quantity
- One considered object beats six. A shelf of unloved plush is a storage problem, not a gift.
- Anything for the nursery aesthetic
- The room is already decided, usually before the baby arrives, and rarely by you.
- Advice books
- They have been given four and read none. New parents are drowning in instruction; add none of your own.
- Anything needing assembly
- There is no free hour in which to assemble it, and there will not be one for some time.
Comfort objects: what actually happens
Somewhere between the first and second year, a lot of children pick something to be attached to. Which thing is entirely up to them, and it is frequently the wrong one — a muslin square, a label, a toy that was never meant to be significant. Nothing you buy can be installed in that role by decision.
What a gift can do is be present, soft, washable and available when the moment arrives. That is the honest description of what you are buying: a candidate, not a certainty. If a child does choose it, the object becomes genuinely useful — a portable piece of home that makes nurseries, hospitals and new bedrooms survivable.
One practical suggestion: if you give a soft object with any hope of it becoming the one, buy two. Parents of an attached toddler will tell you that a lost comfort object is a household emergency, and that a hastily bought replacement is detected instantly.
Safe sleep and soft gifts
For the first twelve months, health guidance in Singapore and internationally is consistent: nothing loose in the cot. No plushies, no blankets, no bumpers, no pillows. A soft toy is for lap time, floor time and the pram — not for sleeping with.
This is worth saying plainly on a page where soft objects are being sold. A gift given now will very often be used later, and it is better to be clear about when than to leave a tired parent guessing at 3am.
Second babies, adoptions and hard arrivals
Second and third babies get markedly fewer gifts, and their parents notice. The novelty has worn off for everyone except the family living it. If anything, a gift for a second baby carries more weight because so few arrive.
Not every arrival is straightforward. Adoption, fostering, NICU stays, and babies who came after a long and painful road all deserve marking without a script. When you do not know what to say, ask what would be welcome — and if the answer is nothing yet, believe it and check again in a month.
Before you decide
The gift matters less than the thinking behind it. These are the pieces people find most useful.
